Mid-Atlantic. This is what everyone calls a Philadelphia accent although it's also the accent of south Jersey, Baltimore, and Wilmington. Well, everyone that lives near there, that is. Outsiders can tell you talk differently from them even though they can't tell what your accent is.
Take this quiz now - it's easy!
I never think of myself as having an accent. Or I figure I lost any accent I had from growing up. Apparently I really do still have somewhat of an accent since this quiz totally nailed where I am from. Spooky.

Date: 2007-04-23 03:06 pm (UTC)I noticed that many times southerners think they are saying words differently but nobody else can tell that. The most common one is "pin" and "pen". I've had so many people tell me they were saying them different so were fustrated that I didn't know which they were asking about but they both sounded exactly alike to me.
I don't know what it is about a southern accent but you guys just don't always hear yourselves like everyone else does.

And it's consistent: I took the same test (same questions, different graphics) and was pegged for Greater Philadelphia area, just a few months ago.
Funny thing is, I haven't lived in South Jersey for about 20 years. And even when I lived there, I made a point of not sounding like my neighbors with the obvious local accents. Ah, well ...
